Introduction and recent updates

Introduction

The editor launched the "My New Book in 750 Words" series in January 2013 to offer short introductions to new books on key global issues. To enable interaction between authors and visitors, the contributions were re-coded into a WordPress blog in March 2013. The old HTML pages have since remained online for the time being.

The "My new book in 750 words" series seeks to provide a multidisciplinary angle on the dynamics between power, space and identity. It challenges authors to discuss their new book in less than 750 words. The interviews address the book's key themes, questions and findings. Moreover, the book is put in perspective by linking it to the author's background and existing literature. Overall, the underlying question is: why should we consider reading this new book?

A World in Emergence. Cities and Regions in the 21st Century

"The emerging cosmopolitan system of gigantic urban centers is steadily coming to the fore as one of the more potent and visible elements of the new world order. The city-regions that make up the system represent important economic motors and political actors on the world stage, but each of them is also riven by social conflicts, rooted above all in the deepening inequalities that they harbor. Cruel Harvest - US Intervention in the Afghan Drug Trade

"The official discourse tells us that the best solution to deal with Afghan drugs is to conduct operations within the country. In fact, the most effective solution is to reduce the demand for drugs in consuming countries. The latter are mostly Europe and Russia. Therefore, we must provide more treatment and prevention services for addicts in Europe, and that should reduce the size of the global narcotics industry."
