Territories, identities and conflict in a changing world order

Courses

Virginie Mamadouh, Universiteit van Amsterdam, December 2009

Introduction

In this seminar on globalization, geopolitics and cultural diversity, we discuss literature about the mutual relation between territory and identity and its consequences for violent conflict in the world.

Description

The territorial perspective implies that we pay attention to the interaction between different scales (global, national and local) in the creation and resolution of conflicts, the social construction of territory (the role of names on the map) and the impact of de- and re-territorialisation (transnationalism, state failure in Africa, etc.). Critical geopolitics has particularly illuminated the role of the US (or the West) in territorializing global conflict mentally and militarily like in the Cold War (containment doctrine) and the ‘war on terror’ (rogue states etc.).

The course is one of the specialization courses of the Political Geographies track of the Master Sociale Geografie aan UvA. It can be taken as elective for students of the Master Sociale Geografie, the Research Master Geography Planning and Development Studies, and other Master Programmes of the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS) of the University of Amsterdam, and for Master students from other Dutch universities.
